Obituary

Sherwin A Kabins M.D. was a graduate of the University of Illinois, School of Medicine, in 1956. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Michael Reese Hospital, in Chicago, in 1960. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1962. He was the first Chairman of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Michael Reese Medical Center, from 1971 to 1999, supervising faculty members who were principal investigators for research grants, awarded by the National Institute of Health and Center for Disease Control. He was a co-founder of the joint infectious disease fellowship training and research program at Michael Reese Hospital and the University of Chicago in 1972. In 1966, he was the first to report, in the United States, in the New England Journal of Medicine, on the sexual transfer of resistance in bacteria. He was also the first in the United States to report in the Journal of Pediatrics, in 1974, on penicillin resistance in pneumococcal, a leading cause of bacterial meningitis, and pneumonia. In 1983, he was among the first to report, in the world, in the American Review of Respiratory, of an unusual fungal pneumonia, in a patient that turned our to have what is now known as AIDS. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He was a Professor of Medicine, first at University of Chicago, and then at the University of Illinois. Despite his accomplishments his greatest pride was his family. Beloved husband of Ellen, happily married for over 65 years; loving father of March (Lori Crohn), Darryl (Andrea) and Laurie (Steve Grindel) Kabins; cherished grandfather of Ashley, Joshua, Jordan Liana, Gabriela, Jacob, Samuel and Benjamin; treasured uncle of Lisa (Jon) Drouin and their children Jack and Joseph.
